Overarching Principles

  • Human-Centric Business: Business is fundamentally about people cooperating and collaborating with other people. Effective business strategy requires a deep, compassionate understanding of the individuals you serve.
  • Pain & Desire Motivation: Customers are primarily motivated by two things: moving away from a current pain and moving toward a desired future. Your positioning and marketing must speak directly to these core motivators.
  • Niche Commitment: True clarity and traction come from committing to a specific niche for a dedicated period (e.g., 90 days) before defining your ideal customer within that niche.

Frameworks

The CARE (Compassionate Avatar Realization Exercise) Worksheet

This framework is designed to create a multi-dimensional profile of an ideal customer avatar by examining three key aspects of their life and mindset.

  1. Head (The Pain):

    • Focus: The avatar’s negative thoughts, worries, fears, and frustrations before they find your solution.
    • Objective: To understand the specific pain points and problems that keep your customer up at night. This includes their fears about their current situation and frustrations with other services or products.
  2. Heart (The Desire):

    • Focus: The positive future state the avatar is longing for. This is the direct opposite of the “Head” pains.
    • Objective: To articulate what your avatar truly dreams of. What does their version of success, freedom, or simplicity look like? This identifies the core motivations and desired outcomes that your product or service helps them achieve.
  3. Home (The Context):

    • Focus: The demographic and psychographic data that describes how your avatar exists in the world.
    • Objective: To gather concrete, factual data points about the avatar’s life. This includes their age, location, profession, income, family situation, hobbies, professional affiliations (like masterminds), and other influences (like business coaches).

Actionable Flight Plan

  1. Prerequisite - Commit to a Niche: Before starting, ensure you have committed to serving a specific niche for at least 90 days.
  2. Create Your Worksheet:
    • Open the provided Google Doc template.
    • Navigate to File > Make a copy.
    • Rename the document to be specific to your business or client.
  3. Conduct Avatar Research:
    • Option A (Existing Clients): Interview a past or current client who represents your ideal avatar.
    • Option B (Market Research): Identify a person who fits your ideal avatar profile. Ask for 15 minutes of their time for market research. Offer a small incentive (e.g., a $25 gift card) if necessary.
    • Option C (Educated Guess): If you cannot interview anyone, use your industry knowledge to make well-informed assumptions about your avatar.
  4. Populate the ‘Head’ Section:
    • Based on your research, list all the avatar’s fears, frustrations, and negative thoughts related to the problem you solve.
  5. Populate the ‘Heart’ Section:
    • List the avatar’s dreams, goals, and the ideal outcomes they desire. What does the “perfect picture” look like for them?
  6. Populate the ‘Home’ Section:
    • Gather and list the relevant demographic and contextual data points about your avatar (age, location, business size, mastermind groups, coaches, etc.).
  7. Synthesize and Describe: Write a brief, one-paragraph description that summarizes your avatar, integrating the key findings from the Head, Heart, and Home sections.
  8. Submit for Feedback: Share your completed CARE worksheet with your coach or peer group to receive feedback and refine your understanding.
